API and You

Air Pollution Index and Air Quality

Which API should I refer to ?

Health effects from air pollution come about due to a combination of the concentration of the air pollutants and the amount of time you are exposed to the air pollution. Exposure to moderately high pollution levels for a short period of time normally will not lead to any significant problem.
For most of us, the general API is more relevant as it represents the air pollution that we are exposed to for most of the time. The general API makes reference to the measurements at our ambient monitoring stations located on 4 to 6-floor buildings. The stations comply with the highest international standards and are designed to be fully accredited and approved by overseas experts to provide accurate and representative air pollution information. Locations of these stations are given below:-

General Ambient Air Quality
Monitoring Station
Characteristics of the Area
Where the Station is Located
1. Central/Western Urban: densely populated residential area with commercial developments
2. Sham Shui Po Urban: densely populated residential area with commercial developments
3. Eastern Urban: densely populated residential area
4. Kwun Tong Urban: densely populated residential area with mixed commercial/industrial developments
5. Kwai Chung Urban: densely populated residential area with mixed commercial/industrial developments
6. Tsuen Wan Urban: densely populated residential area with mixed commercial/industrial developments
7. Tai Po New town: residential area
8. Sha Tin New town: residential area
9. Tung Chung New town: residential area
10. Yuen Long New town: residential area
11. Tap Mun Rural

Areas of similar land uses will have similar air pollution levels. If you live in an area not listed above, you may refer to the API measured in an area similar to where you live.
